This extraordinary Lions Mane extract, unlike many other products on the market, is manufactured entirely from the fruiting body of the fungus and is grown on birch wood. The length of the Lions Mane mushrooms' growth period enables them to produce their complete range of polysaccharides and beta-glucans.
An indication that a mushroom tincture extract has been made from the fruiting body, has been thoroughly extracted, and contains significant concentrations of polysaccharides and beta-glucans is that it is always black and foggy in appearance. Watch out for pale, crystal-clear extracts because they might indicate poor quality, concentration, or extraction.
Please be aware that these products' nature may cause the contents to crystallise around the cap or dropper. Bristol Fungarium recommends soaking the dropper in hot water for a few minutes, taking it out, and letting it air dry before using it again if you experience any dropper problems.
How do they get made?
The dried fruiting body of the mushroom is first gently simmered for 30 hours at 55C, followed by 3 hours of autoclaved boiling at 120C. Many of the polysaccharides that are tightly bound within the structural chitin walls are produced as a result. The non-water soluble triterpenes and acids are then released by a 6-week organic ethanol extraction at 95% alcohol. The two solutions are then combined, which results in a cloud of polysaccharides that are quickly forced out of the mixture by the ethanol (it's quite a sight to behold...) and eventually creates a shelf-stable 30% alcohol content.
This tincture's dark, cloudy hue is a sign that it was effectively extracted, just the fruiting body was used in its production, and it contains significant amounts of polysaccharides and beta-glucans. Crystal clear, pale extracts may indicate low quality, concentration, or extraction.
How much of this lion's mane extract is there?
There are instances when it's difficult to interpret the promised extract ratios for mushroom powders. You may come across wildly different ratios, such as 10:1, 8:1, and even 30:1. This phrase is frequently used to compare the overall weight of the mushrooms upon harvest (10 kg, for example) to the weight of the mushrooms after drying and powdering (1 kg, for example).
10kg of fresh mushrooms equal 1kg of dried mushrooms, hence the ratio is 10:1. This ratio, however, does not apply to an extract and does not indicate the strength of the extract. When buying mushroom tinctures or powders, be sure to enquire about the extraction process and ratio.
Once extracted, this product boasts a 1:4 ratio, which relates to the actual amount of lion's mane in the container.
